Different Screw Types for Sale:
There are various types of wood screws available for different applications. The Eagle Claw Fasteners range is designed for general purpose woodworking and offers a high-performance connection in a variety of materials including hardwoods, softwoods, MDF and OSB.
Head Types
Wood screws typically feature either a flat countersunk head or a round head. Our range features the flat countersunk option, as this is the most popular amongst woodworkers, allowing for a neat, smooth finish. Nibs under the head help the screw head to seat flush with the surface. This head type also works very well when screws are counterbored and plugged.
Drive Systems
Common drive systems for wood screws include slotted, Phillips, Torx (or star) and square (or Robinson) drives. Our research has shown that the Torx drive option is an excellent option with several benefits. This precision drive can handle high torque, preventing stripping and camming. This prolongs driver life and makes it possible to remove screws if needed.
These screws have several advantages that make them an attractive choice for woodworking:
Better holding power: The unique shape of the Star Drive screw allows efficient transmission of torque, hence easily drives the screw into place and provides better holding power in wood.
Cam-out resistance: The Torx head has less of a chance to "cam out" or slip out of the screw head while you are driving them in, thus minimizing damage to surrounding wood and reducing the number of messed up screw heads.
Torx screws can be applied in various woodworking applications, such as:
Furniture making: These screws are often used for attaching legs or shelves and other parts in furniture making.
Decking and fencing: Torx head screws provide a secure and weather-resistant fastening solution for outdoor decking and fencing projects.
Cabinetmaking: These screws are used in cabinetmaking to install shelves, drawers, and other components.
Thread Patterns
Our screws have a medium thread pattern which reduces drive torque especially in hardwoods. This is important, as stainless steel screws are softer than carbon steel screws.
Point Types
We have selected the Type 17 point which helps the screw thread itself into the timber. Note that our screws are not self-drilling and require pilot holes to be drilled for best results.
Eagle Claw Wood Screw Key Features
When choosing which wood screws to buy, it's important to consider their key features, including:
Material: Our wood screws are made from high-quality stainless steel, providing excellent strength, corrosion resistance, and longevity. The polished finish remains visually appealing for years to come.
Other engineered features: The Torx drive, Type 17 Point and Countersinking Nibs under the head all contribute to a quality fastener that drives well, saving you time and money.
Size and Measurement of Screws
Wood screws come in a variety of sizes, which are typically denoted by a number followed by a length measurement. Our range of screws for sale comprises of:
- #8 x 1-3/4” (304 Grade Stainless Steel)
- #10 x 2” (304 Grade Stainless Steel)
- #10 x 2-1/2” (304 and 316 Grade Stainless Steel)
- #10 x 3” (304 and 316 Grade Stainless Steel)
- #10 x 3-1/2” (304 Grade Stainless Steel)
- #12 x 4” (304 Grade Stainless Steel)
Choosing the right Torxhead screw for woodworking involves
Drive size: Many drive sized are available, ranging from T5 through T55. Make sure to use a screw that is of the same drive size as your driver. At Eagle Claw, we prefer to use a T25 as it is the most common.
Length and diameter: The length and diameter of the screw will have to be considered – thicker screws are better for when high strength is required, but you can use a thinner screw for most other applications.
Head type: A variety of head types are often used, like pan head, flat head, and round head. However, as we specialize in decking and fencing screws, we go for the flat head variety as it sits flush with the wood.
Thread type: Consider the thread type required; they include coarse or fine thread. Coarse thread screws work with softwoods, while fine-thread screws are best suitable for hardwoods.
Here are a few points to be taken into consideration when using Torx head screws in woodworking:
Pre-drill pilot holes: Always pre-drill pilot holes to avoid splitting of wood and also for the accurate placing of the screw.
Use proper driver: Always use an appropriate driver that matches the drive size of your screw to avoid stripping of the head of the screw.
Different Wood Screw Applications
Stainless steel wood screws are versatile fasteners suitable for a wide range of applications. Here are a few common projects where wood screws excel:
Decks and Docks
Wood screws provide reliable and sturdy connections for decking boards and dock construction, especially in coastal areas where corrosion resistance is paramount.
Fencing
Use wood screws to securely attach fence panels, rails, and posts, ensuring a durable and long-lasting fence. Stainless steel screws will never rust and spoil your fence with ugly stains.
Tiny Homes and Outdoor Construction
Wood screws are ideal for building tiny homes, sheds, and other outdoor structures, offering strength, stability, and outstanding corrosion resistance.
Furniture Assembly
Whether you're assembling a bookshelf or a table, wood screws provide strong joints and secure connections. The burnished finish remains aesthetically pleasing for years to come.
Installation Tips and Techniques
Here are some tips and techniques to help you achieve successful wood screw installations:
-
Pre-Drilling
For hardwoods or when working near the edges of the wood, pre-drilling pilot holes can prevent splitting and ensure precise screw placement.
-
Countersinking
To achieve a flush finish, consider using a countersink bit to create a recess for the screw head.
-
Torque Control
Use a drill with adjustable torque settings to avoid overtightening and damaging the wood or stripping the screw.
-
Spacing and Alignment
Plan the spacing and alignment of your screws carefully to ensure even distribution and proper structural integrity.
Maintenance and Care of Wood Screws
Stainless steel wood screws do not require any specific maintenance.
All structures should be regularly inspected to ensure structural integrity and safe function.
